Ellen Jong created GIRL cap in NYC in 2015. It started as an edition of 10 as gifts to her friends for the holidays. The following winter she got a request to make a special edition gray on gray for a friend who wanted to gift them to her friends. Eventually, caps got seen, traded, passed along, gifted and soon there was a small request for them mostly in NY and in the art world.
"PEENESS ENVY" was conceived in conversation with a writer for an interview with S Magazine. Jong said "I want to take the 'penis' out of Peeness Envy." It is ironic that "GIRL cap" advocates for those lesser heard or understood so that there is no girl cap.
